The Executioner
In this series I have modified a household electric fly swatter called ‘The Executioner’ and used it to build four machines that create electrical charges. The machines all operate in very different ways but in their DIY construction and sense of play, fun and childlike curiosity permeates the work. Sound is an important component to each machine. For example in Machine No.2 the sound of the motors and the collision of electrical components and charges provides a quiet contemplative space whilst in Machine No.4 the sound is loud, violent and threatening. As the sparks crackle and snap a tool that was intended to be wielded by human hand to kill bugs now appears vicious, dangerous and barbaric.
